Scouts at the History Center
During Archeology Month in October, a scout troop visited the History Center to learn about coastal archeology. The information and activities contributed to their requirements for the scout merit badge in Archeology.
Fifteen folks attended the review that included a slide show about the process of archeological investigations; how to record and interpret an excavation; details of local American Indian groups – Karankawa and Coahuiltecans; information on nearby sites showing the Spanish and French along the coast; and demonstrations of technologies that showed the knowledge that ancient people had.
David Kroskie, archeologist with TPWD and a board member of FHC, related possible careers in archeology. Pam Stranahan, FHC board member, discussed how local archeological sites tell about the early people of Aransas County. Kam Wagert, DRT president, queried each scout about what he/she might put into a time capsule to tell about our modern era. Scouts were encouraged to attend the Texas Archeological Society field school during the summer - www.txarch.org.
Scouts who are interested in sessions on archeology may contact the History Center (361) 727-9214 or email@example.com to arrange a visit and lessons.
Shellcrete: We’re designing an outdoor exhibit on shellcrete and looking for memories and old photographs. N.F. Jackson put this together for us about sidewalks in Old Rockport. Comments welcome! Click here to see the documentation.
