Foodways: Culinary Traditions of Aransas County

Presents : “A Glimpse of The Vietnamese Culture”

The presentation was presented on August 25th, 2018 by Leah Oliva, Sam Vong, and Lyly Nguyen.

 

Sam Vong– He is a Twentieth-Century Historian specializing in refugee and migration studies, Asian American History, and The History of Southeast Asia. He received his B.A. from The University of California-Berkeley, his M.A. from California State University. Before  joining the faculty at UT Austin in 2015, he was appointed as The Inaugural Bruce Gray Postdoctoral Fellow (2013-2015) at Gustavus Adolphus College, where he taught courses on race, ethnicity, and migration. He is a curator for Asian Pacific American History at The Smithsonian Institution.

Lyly Nguyen-Entrepreneur, she and her husband manage Hu Dat Noodle Restaurant in Corpus Christi. They have ties with the Aransas County Asian community.

Leah Nguyen Oliva– She grew up in Rockport after immigrating with her family from Vietnam in 1978. After leaving town to pursure a professional career, she now resides in Fulton with her husband, Ed and son, Lucas. She is active with the Aransas County History Center and St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She’s currently working on a project documenting her family’s journey escaping Vietnam.
